FIELD GUIDE: introduction

Coincidentally, this occurs nearly in tandem with the New Year—an event as trivial as my resolve to fix the chaos in my home. The truth is, I am overwhelmed by the mountain of projects, clutter, and disorganization that a few neglected years have generously bestowed upon me. Thus, I embark on my conquest: one 45-minute revelatory session at a time, one day’s effort in the grand scheme. Some of these endeavors may actually stretch into six months, and I find that perfectly acceptable. I tell myself this as a soothing mechanism, so kindly indulge me.

We’re starting with manageable things that I know I can accomplish. (Once upon a time I did actually have a clean and organized home). Working from creating the discipline of routine to most highly used (and therefore cluttered) areas, then to the super scaries like the attic and workshop. Yikes. So we won’t go there yet. I am afraid so you should be too.

I’ve read what seems like a million books on organization and cleaning and creating a calm home. And let’s not forget a couple of good Netflix binges of organizing shows. All have great ideas, so I’m borrowing some of those, combining them with what works for my home, and just giving it a valiant, and perhaps vain, attempt.

If some of this works for you, lovely. If it doesn’t, I would love to know what does. Because it’s probably a better idea that I should try too. I am not a professional organizer, I’m not a professional anything. I’m just a busy mom who wants her home to become a sanctuary. A safe haven. A joyful place to make memories. A source of restoration, not frustration.

So let’s give it a go. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?

The guides that follow are broken down into aspirationally manageable topics – pick and choose one or follow the manual in order.
